WHAT LAWS APPLY TO LICENSED DRIVERS UNDER AGE 18? A graduated driver license is issued to an applicant who is at least 16, but less than 18, years of age and is valid to operate any vehicle that does not require a motorcycle or commercial license.
GDL NIGHT RESTRICTIONS For the first 6 months, a driver with graduated driver's license shall not drive a motor vehicle on a public highway from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. unless either:
- The driver is accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who has a class A, B, C or D license and who occupies a seat beside the class G licensee.
- The driver is driving directly to or from a sanctioned school sponsored activity, the driver's place of employment, a sanctioned religious activity or a family emergency.
GDL PASSENGER RESTRICTIONS A 16- or 17-year-old driver (class G licensee) may not operate a motor vehicle in Arizona with more than one passenger under the age of 18 who is not an immediate family member until six months from the date the person's driver license was issued, unless the licensee is accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who has a class A, B, C or D license and who occupies a seat beside the class G licensee.
CAN I DRIVE A FRIEND AROUND IF I'VE HAD MY LICENSE FOR LESS THAN SIX MONTHS? No, unless the passengers are immediate family members, it is against the law to drive with more than one passenger under the age of 18 in the car for the first six months of having been issued a driver license. According to one source, around 90 percent of teen crashes happen the first months teens have a driver license. The drivers of these crashes are killed more often than their passengers.
